Jessica was scrolling through her Facebook feed one evening when she came across a post that caught her eye. It was from a profile named "John Smith - Powerball Winner," and the post read:
Post:
"Congratulations to our latest winners! 🎉 You could be next! We are giving away $1,000,000 in our holiday lottery! To enter, simply send us a message with your name and email address!"
Intrigued, Jessica clicked on the profile. It had numerous posts showcasing supposed winners holding oversized checks and celebrating their good fortune. The comments section was filled with people congratulating the winners and expressing their excitement about the lottery.
Feeling lucky, Jessica decided to send a message to the profile. Almost immediately, she received a reply:
Message:
"Thank you for your interest, Jessica! To officially enter the lottery, please provide your full name, address, and phone number. You will also need to pay a small processing fee of $50 to secure your entry."
Jessica hesitated. The idea of winning a million dollars was tempting, but the request for a fee raised a red flag. However, the excitement of potentially winning was hard to resist. She thought about how much she could do with that money—pay off her student loans, travel, and even help her family.
After a few moments of deliberation, she decided to go ahead and send the fee via a popular payment app. She thought, "What’s $50 if I could win a million?"
Once she sent the money, she received another message:
Message:
"Congratulations! You are officially entered! We will contact you within 24 hours with the results. Good luck!"
The next day, Jessica eagerly checked her messages, but there was no word from the lottery. Hours turned into days, and still, no updates. Growing concerned, she decided to reach out to the profile again.
Message:
"Hi, I’m just checking in about the lottery results. I haven’t heard anything."
No response came. Jessica began to feel uneasy. She did some research on the profile and discovered that it had been reported multiple times for scamming people out of their money. Panic set in as she realized she had fallen for a lottery scam.
